CASA Snapshots
CASA volunteers do amazing things in their role of advocate, every single day. Here is a snapshot of some of them:
The Extra Mile
CASA Volunteer Linda Napiorski called the CASA office from a bus while on vacation in Costa Rica to let her Advocacy Supervisor know her CASA child was hospitalized for a night and was changing placements. Linda coordinated with the caseworker, law guardian, youth, and youth's aunt (new placement), all with limited daily access to phone service to ensure everyone was on the same page about the youth's needs and that the transition plan was in place. Thank you, Linda!
Stepping Up
CASA Volunteer Mary Claire Lewis has advocated for five siblings since January 2020. A new, younger sibling was added to the litigation this month, and Mary Claire graciously agreed to be her advocate as well. It's a big development in a very long case, but Mary Claire stepped right up when the case presented new complexity. Thank you, Mary Claire!
Found in Translation
Karen Vick is in her second year on a case with a family that speaks Spanish only. Thing is, Karen doesn't speak Spanish. So, she gets creative! Before her monthly visits, Karen drafts questions and relies on Google Translate to be prepared. She also coordinates the timing of visits with when the DCPP bilingual caseworker will be there, which helps Karen ensure she can engage in robust conversations that create connection. Despite the language barrier, Karen's perseverance has enabled a strong bond with the family. Her commitment has made the best of what could have been a difficult situation and ensures thorough, well-informed advocacy for a family that needs a CASA volunteer's support. Thank you Karen!
